Louisville Wedding Photography BLOG!

Hello to all of my wonderful friends and blog readers.  I'm Amy Shepherd, a Wedding Photographer from Louisville, Kentucky. This blog is designed to give you a little insight into my life and business, so to get things started I will share a bit about me.  We all wear many different hats and some of my favorites include: being a wife to the super awesome Paul Shepherd, a mother of two amazing little boys, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and of course a PHOTOGRAPHER!  I love... music, singing opera in the shower, chocolate, spring, vacations (anytime and anywhere), date nights out, family nights at home, flowers, wearing scarves in the winter, taking walks, Paul's Thai chicken recipie, long veils in the wind, sunglasses, eyes, smiles....

I feel that photography is a means of expression that transforms your life and experiences into tangible works of art.  Everyone is familiar with the expression "a picture is worth a thousand words" but I would venture to say that the moments captured in an image are priceless.  The sweet expression of a child, a father's face as he embraces his daughter at the alter,  the love shared between a bride and groom as they dance together for the first time are all moments for which the personal value transcends any monetary cost.  The investment in beautiful and timeless imagery is one of the most imortant choices you can make for your family.

So...now that we know each other don't be a stranger! Please feel free to post your thoughts and ideas in the comment section.

2010 Vintage

There is nothing like the peaceful serenity that washes over me when I am driving through the flat farm country of northern Ohio and from the highway I can see my grandpa’s white barn in the distance.  As I  get closer and pull into the driveway I habitually glance at the barn to read the words painted at the top.  The name “Fred J. Speck” appears in black lettering with painted cows on each side.  Older photographs show the name of my great grandfather “Fred H. Speck” which was changed when my grandpa took over the farm.  I am by no means a farmer (and never intend to take that up as a profession), but a rich agricultural history on both sides of my family draw me to the wholesome values of that lifestyle.  As a family we made some decisions this year to become more conscious of  issues related to our health, diet and environment. While the change might be subtle, and to some people seem insignificant each step made in the right direction is progress.  One of my goals this year was to learn to use a canner! My mom knows how to can fruits and vegetables, as does my grandma, great-grandma etc.  I decided that I did not want to be the generation that became so driven by the convenience of a grocery store isle that I  ”lost” skills that women of the past used on a regular basis.  So, will I be canning all of my own food….no!! That thought makes me laugh!! If you know me well, you are probably already laughing.  At this point in my life I have not even been able to keep two poor pepper plants alive. (Maybe that can be part of my goals for next year.)  My plan for this year was green beans, and the jelly project was really just a spin off of that.  After a trip to Huber’s Orchard I came home with 3 bushel of snap beans.  All said and done I ended up with 61 quarts of beans! Feeling pretty proud of our accomplishment Paul and I took the boys back to Huber’s to pick a few apples and that is when it happened.  The seedless concord grapes were ready, and Paul tasted his first grape fresh off of the vine.  Needless to say we went a bit overboard with our picking.  How in the world could we eat 14 lbs. of grapes before they spoiled.  I am not sure who first suggested that we attempt grape jelly, but it became a team effort and we had such a fun time mashing grapes with the kids.

Oh, and if any moms out there are interested we used the book “Secrets of the Vine - for Young Hearts” as a fun and meaningful object lesson for the boys.  It is a beautiful book and the illustrations are lovely.

Here’s to an amazing summer!

Leah & AJ - Huber’s Winery

Where to even start!  This massive blog post is a small insight into how much we enjoyed sharing in Leah and AJ’s day.  We have photographed many weddings at Huber’s winery over the years, but it was super special to photograph a Huber wedding on their farm.  Leah and AJ are such warm and caring people and that was reflected in the tremendous love and support from their friends and family.  I am hard at work on their amazing album and cannot wait for it to all come together.

Anna + Tony - Louisville Wedding Photography

This blog post will take a bit of time travel….all the way back to May.  We have been blessed to work with many fantastic couples this year and I wanted to high-light some of the beautiful moments we were able to capture at Anna and Tony’s wedding.  I had not met Anna and Tony in person prior to the wedding day, but we instantly connected and they were amazing to work with.  Their wedding was at the cathedral downtown and then we rounded the corner for the reception at the Starks building.  Enjoy~

Stacy and Daniel ~ Louisville Wedding

There is nothing I love more than a garden wedding! The sweet charm and simplicity, combined with a Victorian flare made this day perfectly elegant.  The planning, design and flowers were handled by Lauren Chitwood Events.  Lauren and her team were amazing and despite the heat saw that every detail came together flawlessly.  Stacy and Daniel were wonderful to work with and their love, respect and admiration for each other was evident throughout the day.  We are currently working on the design for their gorgeous wedding album and I cannot wait to have their book printed.  Best wishes to you both~

Holly & Jordan - Louisville Engagement Session

This has been an extremely hot summer! Hot brides, hot venues, hot sessions and HOT WEATHER.  Our May and June brides have been great sports and despite the heat we have been so pleased with the images we have been able to produce for our clients.  Of course we love the actual wedding day, but one of our favorite times with our clients is the engagement session.  We can just hang out and have fun.  It is the perfect opportunity to get to know eachother and develop a great working relationship before the wedding day arrives.  When we start talking with our clients about the engagement session it is important to develop a concept for the look and feel of the session.  We want our clients to open up and give us insight into their lives, their likes and preferences.  The location and wardrobe selection sets the tone for the session and we are able to create a set of images that reflects the individual personalities of the couple we are working with.

Enjoy!

June Weddings

Dear blog readers! I am so excited to resume a somewhat regular blogging schedule.  We have been busy shooting so many fabulous brides, fantastic venues etc.  Despite an extremely busy shooting schedule over the last six weeks  we have managed to stay energized and push ourselves to create our best work ever.  I am up to my elbows with editing at the moment, but I wanted to take a breather to say a quick hello and share an image from our wedding last Friday.

Stay tuned…more to come!

Sierra & Wayne - Louisville Wedding Photography

It is such a joy to work with the amazing and wonderful people who entrust me with the honor of capturing some of the most beautiful moments of their lives.  This requires more than just owning a camera or even mastering the technical elements of lighting and exposure.  There is a passion, love and understanding behind what I do and the images I create.  My goal is to capture the essence of the person and the relationship they have with their loved ones.  The way agroom looks at his bride, the smiles and tears on the faces of the joy filled parents.  The weathered hands of a grandmother embracing her lovely young granddaughter - these are the moments I work to freeze in time.  Weddings are a snapshot into the soul of a family, a new piece of your family history.  I truly love an appreciate my clients and enjoy getting to know them on a level beyond that of a traditional wedding vendor.

I am excited to share a few images from Sierra and Wayne’s October wedding.  Their wedding was featured in the latest issue of  Jacki Allen’s Kentucky Bride Magazine, so grab a copy off the stands and check it out!Louisville PhotographyLouisville Wedding PhotographerWedding Photography, Louisville, KentuckyLouisville Wedding Photography

louisville engagement photographylouisville engagement photographer‘Tis the season for shooting a ton of amazing engagement sessions.  Our goal is to stay creative and fresh and the more frequently you shoot the harder it becomes to reinvent our selves and our work.  Paul and I made it a point to find new locations, ideas and inspirations to kick off the 2010 season. We have had a great time working with such fabulous clients who are willing to go with the flow and the end result has been amazing.

Just as a note…we have been hard at work designing several new products and art pieces for our clients to enjoy! Stay tuned for more to come.

Amanda & Chris

Spring is always my favorite time of the year, and this year is no exception.  I feel  recharged, energized and feel inspired to create new and innovative work as the 2010 wedding season begins.  It was a blast working with Chris and Amanda, not to mention that it was  amazing to shoot on a day that was neither too hot or too cold as is often the case.  They are an amazing couple and totally in love with each other.  The photography was definitely one of their highest priorities and I am just thrilled with the images that we were able to capture.  Enjoy~

Adrian & Kim - Louisville Wedding

Drum roll please…. I am excited to share the highlights from Kim and Adrian’s fabulous winter wedding.  The beautiful weather we enjoyed over the weekend made me forget that it was only a few weeks ago that we were buried under several inches of snow.  My fingers are crossed and I am hopeful that spring is here to stay.  Despite my preference for warmer weather, we did have a blast with Kim and Adrian as we trudged through the snow on their wedding day.  They both serve in the air force and are the kindest and most genuine people  you could hope to meet.  Best wishes to you both~
