I have been trying to learn something new every day. Even if it is just a simple little piece of trivia, and I am attempting to stay on track with this commitment. It has been inspiring and uplifting to push myself forward and work toward bettering myself both personally and professionally. My grandfather is a self-proclaimed “jack of all trades, yet master of none” and this drive for learning was passed to my mother, and then consequently to me. The catch is that I also inherited my father’s extreme desire for perfection…also passed down to him from his parents. This explosive combination has led to a lifetime of frustration with my own personal limitations, starting with the stories of a disgruntled little girl learning to tie her shoe, and building to the 30 year old woman who is irritated that she can’t re-wire her house, fix the car, write the HTML code for her website, have a June Cleaver style dinner on the table at six, etcetera, etcetera…etcetera. I am often paralyzed by all there is to be accomplished, and I have to remind myself to take one step at a time. There was a James Dean quote on the wall of a restaurant that resonated with me, “dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today.” My grandpa always says that he wants to “go with his boots on.” If we stop pushing ourselves to learn and grow then our future will start to look pretty bleak. So, here is to all of the adventures tomorrow will bring.

(For awhile I was all wrapped up in fonts…yes, of the Serif and San-Serif variety! And I’ve recently delved into the world of ethics in biotechnology. I know…I’m all over the place. Yikes!! )

To say that life…my life…is crazy might just be the most enormous understatement of the year. I have to beg your pardon for sounding a bit melodramatic, but this is my attempt at honesty. The truth may often be brutal, however, in this case I find it somewhat freeing to be open and transparent for a few moments. It is important to set personal and professional goals in our pursuit of success and thus far most of my benchmarks have been focused on the WHAT (i.e. such as learning how to use a camera for starters…wink, building the infrastructure for a successful business etc.) I am beyond blessed and thrilled with my life both personally and professionally. So, this year I have determined to direct my thoughts and attention inward to the WHY. What is my purpose as a wife, mother, business woman and photographer? It is easy to draw a barrier between the professional image that I work to convey and the quirky, pj wearing, opera singing, mom that I am the rest of the time. I would like to dedicate this new section of my blog to opening a small window into my thoughts and life on my favorite day of the week…Monday!

Why Monday?

I really do love Monday! Weird…I know, but if I am going to live up to my promise of being open and honest, then I suppose this is just part of the bargain. It is not that I made a conscious decision to love Monday above any other day of the week, and I cannot even say when I first realized this preference. Since I photograph primarily weddings, my week is shifted from the traditional Monday to Friday/ nine to five model. Monday is my catch up day, my day of rest, and filled with so many possibilities. I always start the week with enthusiasm, ready to attack my impossibly long and unrealistic “to-do” list. Usually by Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning I am a bit disappointed as I come to terms with the fact that I will not accomplish my goal to conquer the world…which seemed completely doable on Monday as I was scribbling out my list. So, as long as the self delusion continues and the hope of accomplishing more than humanly possible stays my modus operandi, I believe that my feelings toward Monday will remain unchanged.

Last year the photo-booth was a last minute venture. The thought popped into my head approximately two hours before the party started, so I enlisted the help of my mother and grandma to run to Hancock Fabrics to come up with something. After evaluating several picture texts the fabric was selected and they rushed home to set it up. Fortunately, I was a little more on top of things this year and had the time to pre-plan in a bit more detail. I try to make a photo album for each birthday and we loved having the fun and crazy pics of our family and friends. The cowboy theme was a ton of fun and it was difficult to reign myself in and let some of my ideas go, and I am sad to admit that I have already started brainstorming for next year.

Thanks to mom for sewing the burlap curtain for the background!

It is certainly easy to get swept up and carried away with an idea, and I must admit a natural inclination toward that evil. I will place the blame directly on my mother, and I believe that she will gladly affirm the validity of my statement. (Mom has always been a party planning extraordinaire!) In our home, birthday celebrations have been elevated to rival any national holiday. I am fortunate that my boys were born only five days apart, making a combined party feasible, thus allowing me to justify in my mind the necessity of such a crazy party. I can only hope that any children the Shepherd family will be blessed with in the future will be April babies! This year it was really more than just a party…it was a week of celebrations, gifts and hoopla culminating in the Buckaroo Bash on Sunday. I am still working on editing the 1000+ pictures that were taken on Sunday, but for now I will share three of my favorites. XO

Up into the cherry tree, who should climb but little me? I held the trunk with both my hands and looked abroad in foreign lands. I saw the next door garden lie, adorned with flowers, before my eye, and many pleasant places more that I had never seen before. I saw the dimpling river pass and be the sky’s blue looking-glass; the dusty roads go up and down with people tramping in to town. If I could find a higher tree farther and farther I should see, to where the grown-up river slips into the sea among the ships, to where the road on either hand lead onward into fairy land, where all the children dine at five, and all the playthings come alive. ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON
