My Boys…

The old addage is true that the cobbler’s children have no shoes! People say to me…  “you must photograph your children all of the time,” and while I do have beautiful portraits of my children they are by far my most difficult clients.  Because of this, finding the time to photograph them usually gets pushed to the bottom of the list.  I want to design the perfect shoot, with the perfect location, outfits etc. but really it is about capturing the moments.  These moments that go by so quickly, and often fade from out memories if we do not have a photograph to remind us. It was about one o’clock yesterday and I knew that the afternoon light was going to be beautiful, so I grabbed some mis-matched clothes out of their closets and we headed out the door.  I packed my gear and loaded the kids into the car…and off we went.  The time I spent with the boys was so much fun! The photographs are not perfect in a technical sense, but when I was going through them today they spoke to my heart.  The pictures are profound because they give us a glimpse into the souls of these sweet little guys.

Ah my friend, there is no such thing as a technically perfect children’s portrait. The perfect part is capturing their uniqueness, a smile that is only theirs, a laugh you can hear echoing from the paper it’s printed on, the story their eyes tell as they look into the lens. The fact that they won’t be still, that their hands are going everywhere, and they usually look everywhere but where you want them too. The images in a children’s session might be out of focus a tad with more than one little one or not “artsy” and composed as you hoped….but these photos tell a story of two precious boys who love each other and are full of joy and life. A time in their lives that is carefree and in the moment. That’s what you’ll always remember from those photos and in that, they ARE perfect.
